Measures and Observations

The heart of any longitudinal investigation lies in data quality; namely, the objectivity, replicability, and validity of the longitudinal measures that it employs. The public transduction of empirical phenomena into theoretical constructs distinguishes this enterprise from commonsense and clinical intuition. We spent two years in preliminary study to ensure that the procedures were sensitive to the phenomena that we wanted to focus upon. In the light of the fallibility of single information sources, we employed multiple measures of each variable or characteristic. We also thought it essential to understand the source of variance that each measure captured before we attempted to combine the components. The procedures employed extend from information from teachers, peers, parents, social networks, the courts and probation departments, school records, school yearbooks and newspapers, and interviews with the individuals themselves. The measures included:
